Meraux Foundation Establishes Hurricane Ida Recovery Program
Awards Grant to Irene Campbell Foundation
The Meraux Foundation has established the Hurricane Ida Recovery Program to address local community needs in the wake of the destructive Category 4 storm. Its first grant through the program was made to the Irene Campbell Foundation just days after the storm. The nonprofit is managed by Eugene Campbell, who has been on the ground helping area residents impacted by hurricane.
“Eugene is a true servant leader, and we are proud to continue supporting his good work in our community,” said Rita Gue, the president of the Meraux Foundation who advised Campbell to create his foundation and was the first to fund it in May. “Many people in our community were impacted by the storm, including Eugene. But as is typical, he selflessly stepped up to help others.”
The Meraux Foundation’s grant to the Irene Campbell Foundation, in part, helped fund a food distribution on Sept. 4 organized by the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Irene Campbell Foundation and the Community Center of St. Bernard.

A deep bench of volunteers, including Campbell, Meraux Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, and Community Center representatives, and numerous Leadership St. Bernard alumni, distributed more than 800 hot meals to residents amid widespread power outages.

“The spirit of the St. Bernard community has been on full display with so many people coming together to help each other,” said Campbell. “I’m so grateful to the Meraux Foundation, the Chamber, and the Community Center for all they do – not just after Ida, but every day of the year.”

Through its Hurricane Ida Recovery Program, the Meraux Foundation is monitoring the situation to identify critical needs so that its funds have the greatest impact. It is not accepting proposals or solicitations for grants and is only funding existing 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving St. Bernard Parish.
