Meraux Foundation Hosts Workshop for Fishermen

The seafood industry has been challenged in recent years by external factors, including the influx of lower priced seafood from international markets, the long-term impacts from the oil spill, and potential damage to fisheries from diversions. There have been recent efforts to support the industry, including workforce development and direct marketing initiatives; however, challenges remain.

The Meraux Foundation hosted a workshop on Feb. 6, 2017 to discuss the legacy of the seafood industry and lessons learned from recent initiatives that can be used to support commercial fishing in the future.

The presenters included Andrew Jacques of the Working on the Water, Dominique Seibert of the LSU AgCenter, Nic Dixon of the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana, and Brad Robin of Robin Seafood.

Working on the Water, presented by the Meraux Foundation, is an initiative created after the 2010 BP oil spill. Its mission is to support coastal businesses and improve the resiliency of the coastal economy. To learn more visit www.workingonthewater.com.

This workshop is a series in the Water Challenge, an initiative funded by the Greater New Orleans Foundation, supported by the Economic Development Administration, and generously sponsored by Entergy Corporation.
