Meraux Foundation Recent Coastal Highlights
St. Bernard is at the forefront of the fight to restore our coast. The Meraux Foundation prioritizes coastal initiatives to safeguard our wetlands and protect our homes, culture, and economy.
Here are some recent highlights from our coastal program.
CENTRAL WETLANDS REFORESTATION COLLECTIVE
We are a founding member of this consortium of organizations that will plant 30.000+ cypress & tupelo trees &33.000+ plugs of marshgrasses.
CHENIER NATURE PARK & TRAIL
Construction has begun on the 45 acres we donated to foster recreation, eco-tourism & livability while supporting flood control in Buccaneer Villa in Chalmette.
40 ARPENT TERRACE FIELD
Through this coastal restoration project, with our partners, we created a linear group of islands behind the levee, bolstering wetland habitat contributing to the area's overall ecological health. Phase two will happen within the coming year.
RESTORATION HQ
With our support,CRCL has established a base of operations in Violet where it grows cypress trees for restoration, process oyster shells that are used to create living shorelines & mobilize thousands of volunteers each year.
Our other ongoing coastal programs include spearheading CWPPRA Projects, Oyster Shell Recycling, Nunez Community College Living Shorelines, Coastal Plantings, Waters to the Sea® Mississippi River Delta Educational Initiative, and the Chalmette High 4H Black Mangrove Program, among others.
